Learning Together

PE in KS2

LOWER KEY STAGE 2

In Years 3 and 4 children develop attacking skills through a range of different sports and activities. They  also develop their knowledge of simple attacking tactics, which are transferable across similar categories of invasion games, net or wall games, target and striking and fielding.

Lower KS2 Pupils are taught P.E. by:

  • the development of attacking skills through a range of different sports and activities
  • activities delivered through uneven sides, i.e. 3V1, 4V2
  • the children developing their knowledge of simple attacking tactics, which are transferable across similar categories of games (i.e. Invasion games, Net/Wall, Target and Striking and Fielding)
  • the children will be taught how to develop their performance and sequencing skills in dance and gymnastics
  • the application of all skills through the relevant Core tasks which are linked to age expectations

UPPER KEY STAGE 2-

In Years 5 and 6 children continue to develop their attacking skills when working as a team and  develop their knowledge of defending strategies. The children learn through the different categories of games which leads to playing at school games Level 1 competitions.

Years 5 and 6  dance and gymnastics  develops performance skills and leads to children composing longer sequences of movements with a partner and group.

Upper KS2 Pupils are taught P.E. by:

  • the children  continuing to develop attacking skills when working as a team
  • the development of defending tactics which will be taught
  • deliverance of these skills through modified mini-versions from uneven sides to even sides, i.e. 5V3, 5V4,4V4, 5V5 etc.
  • learning received through different categories of games will lead to playing in intra school games competitions and for some children moving to inter competitions
  • the children will develop performance and compose longer sequences of movements with a partner and group in dance and gymnastics
  • the application of all skills through the relevant Core tasks which are linked to age expectations

SWIMMING -

All children in KS2 are taught how to swim. They perform self-rescue in different water based situations, develop the skill to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres and use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, breaststroke and backstroke.

To achieve this outcome, all children in KS2 swim for 2 weeks each year. Any child in need of extra help receive extra swimming instruction.

In addition to the above, opportunities are given to all of our children to develop a healthy lifestyle through cross-curricular work on diet and food choices along with the impact of sport and activity in their lives.

This will be done through:

  • the implementation of Playground Leaders to direct play during playtimes; all leaders being given training through the local sport offer
  • a school Sport Crew who promote activities, create extra training sessions for sporting teams and encourage intra-sporting competitions and personal challenge
  • the training and promotion of Sport Ambassadors for the school
  • the reporting of competitions and events out of school in the school newsletter, on the website and to the governor responsible for P.E.
  • the use of lunchtime qualified sport coaches each lunchtime to work on FMS and team sport activities
  • extra-curricular sporting clubs aimed at all year groups throughout the year
  • the inclusion of less motivated children in inclusion activities both with school and as representatives of school (where they will experience sports not provided in school which are not in a competitive atmosphere)
  • participation in national strategies such as Walk to School, Bikeability and Balance bikes
  • the identification of healthy living topics in science and PSHE
