Music Curriculum Maps

'Music has a power of forming the character and should therefore be introduced into the education of the young.' (Aristotle)

'Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, and life to everything… Without music, life would be an error.' (Plato)

A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. The National Curriculum programmes of study set out the minimum requirements for music as a starting point for schools developing innovative provision to meet the needs of their pupils.

In Mellor St Mary CE Primary School, we use the progressive and sequential Kapow music planning scheme, which has the potential to make a significant contribution to children’s development: increasing confidence and self-esteem, developing leadership, team working, concentration, creativity, developing identity and improving social cohesion within the school and wider community.

The Kapow music scheme of work has been designed as a spiral curriculum:

  • PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: Upon returning to each key area, prior knowledge is utilised so pupils can build upon previous foundations, rather than starting again.
  • CYCLICAL: Pupils return to the key areas again during their time in primary school.
  • INCREASING DEPTH: Each time a key area is revisited it is covered with greater complexity.
