United Benefice Appointment

Job Description – Church Administrator Role,

the United Benefice of Balderstone, Mellor & Samlesbury

We are looking for an administrator to come and support the parishes of St Leonard’s Balderstone, St Mary’s Mellor & St Leonard the Less Samlesbury on a flexible, part-time, self-employed basis to support the ministry team.

We are looking for someone who has good IT skills, including the use of social media, is self-motivated and can learn the role as they work and is a considerate communicator.

The churches are run separately, but are a United Benefice, whilst sharing a vicar and are on a journey of beginning to work together on a range of events and experiences.

Ideally, we would like someone who lives within the Benefice and the post would be for an initial trial period of 3 months.

This would be for 8 hours per week (two mornings/afternoons to suit) and paid at £12 per hour. Hours & renumeration would be reviewed at the end of the 3-month trial period.

The role will enable the Vicar to spend more time engaging with the local community, visiting schools and their pastoral activities.

The duties of the Parish Administrator have been reviewed and are as follows:

  • Producing and printing off the weekly notice sheets using the Redemptorist weekly sheets.
  • Publishing/distributing the monthly UB Newsletter for the Parishes and maintaining the distribution lists for this.
  • Keeping the UB services rota up to date and producing a monthly update for inclusion in the newsletter.
  • Updating the details for the UB parishes on our websites including ‘A church near you” and the Diocesan website.
  • Providing administrative support for the occasional offices within the Benefice (weddings, funerals, Baptisms, etc.), including maintaining the Life Events diary.
  • Maintaining a database of past and present wedding couples, in line with GDPR requirements, to enable the Parishes to maintain regular contact with them.
  • Dealing with post and emails received – forwarding them to the Vicar, churchwardens, and other parish officers as appropriate.
  • Ordering stationery, stamps, printer ink and paper as required and seasonal items e.g. Palm crosses; and dealing with suppliers.
  • Producing communications for special events and seasonal services e.g. Christmas services etc.

The work is to be carried out in the office at Mellor Vicarage but may be done remotely if convenient.
